Scott Adams was an inspiration to me

He appeared on my podcast twice. He had a remarkable ability to lighten otherwise dark situations and a unique talent for simplifying complex systems.

Scott Adams died yesterday.

Everybody knows Dilbert.

It's one of the most famous comic strips in history, appearing in thousands of newspapers worldwide—until publications dropped it after he was cancelled in 2023 for stating something that was deliberately taken out of context.

Based on the current way things are going, the best advice I would give to white people is to get the hell away from Black people. Just get the fuck away. Wherever you have to go, just get away. Because there’s no fixing this. This can’t be fixed. So I don’t think it makes any sense as a white citizen of America to try to help Black citizens anymore. It doesn’t make sense. There’s no longer a rational impulse. So I’m going to back off on being helpful to Black America because it doesn’t seem like it pays off.

— Scott Adams

Any reasonable person would wonder what prompted such a comment, and upon reflection, would quickly realise Scott was responding to an American survey asking whether they agreed with the statement: 'It's okay to be white'.

Scott, like many of us, was becoming tired of the constant woke demonising of White people.

Just about every newspaper collectively pulled the plug on Dilbert.

Of course it's okay to be White.

Anyway.

I remember, during my school years, having to answer exam questions about the satire and comedic devices used in Dilbert.

Scott admitted he couldn't draw well, and what he lacked in illustrative skill, he more than made up for with sharp writing and humour. He was one of my inspirations for pursuing a career as a professional cartoonist back in 2005. And here I am today—multiple books, a few awards, and thousands of published cartoons later.

Then, during the Covid era, I had the privilege of hosting Scott on my podcast—twice, in fact. I recall feeling butterflies in my stomach the first time he appeared.

Within minutes, his warmth and humility scared away the butterflies.

🎙️ Our 2024 episode

The second time Scott appeared on my podcast was in 2024, and here is the video episode once again.

The audio episode is also available on most podcast apps.

In this episode, he admitted he had been wrong about the entire Covid situation and expressed regret over receiving the jab. He also discussed AI, explaining why it is less scary than some suggest, and recounted the 'it's okay to be white' incident.

We’re constantly bombarded with fake news, propaganda, agendas, and outright lies. It’s an information war. What is true? I don’t know either—but I’m trying to find out.
