Etienne de la Boétie² obviously is not his real name. It's a hat-tip to the real Etienne de la Boétie, who lived centuries ago.
Étienne de la Boétie was a French writer and philosopher born in 1530 in Sarlat-la-Canéda, in the Périgord region of south-west France, to an aristocratic family where his father served as a royal official. Orphaned at age ten, he was raised by his uncle, a priest. His most renowned work, "Discourse on Voluntary Servitude", critiques tyranny and voluntary submission to authority; it was published posthumously in 1576 by Simon Goulart in a collection of pamphlets opposing the French monarchy.
