While visiting my friend Farmer Angus, I bumped into a filmmaker, Joshua Snyman, who made a delightful documentary about Angus a few months ago and mentioned to me his filmmaking experiences in the Antarctic.
Obviously, I wanted to hear more about the Antarctic, since I know very few people who've been there.
First, the film about Angus
Angus has been on my podcast a few times, most recently on the UK Column series, in which he exposed the foot and mouth disease scam, referring to it as 'foot in mouth disease', due to its politicised nature.
I highly recommend watching Joshua's film about Angus and, more specifically, his approach to farming. As a reminder, Angus (known as 'Farmer Angus') is a regenerative farmer. This approach focuses on putting the environment and animal wellbeing first, while reducing reliance on pharmaceutical products.
It's around 20 minutes and beautifully made. Naturally, Angus was on top form.
Second, Joshua's adventures
I would love to visit the Antarctic, but I can't afford it.
The following video was taken from Joshua's Instagram. He is in the Antarctic, sharing a deep, philosophical moment.
I can only imagine how being in such a remote, vast world of icy emptiness must impact one's outlook on life. Being there must be paradoxically enlightening and deadly in its extreme tranquility.
Fun facts:
- Antarctica is actually a desert because of its extremely low levels of rain.
- It’s the windiest place on Earth.
- Antarctica holds around 70% of the world's fresh water.
- Antarctica has no native land mammals, but is home to a range of wildlife including penguins.
What's it like there?
I invited Joshua onto my weekly live stream (for paid subscribers) to take me through his experiences there—from flying to sleeping, walking around, military presence, and coping with the extreme temperatures.
